Stump Grinding in Greater Chattanooga
Stump grinding that gives you the spot back.
One stump in the front yard, or the stumps left behind after a bigger job. Whether the tree came down last week or years ago, we'll come take a look and give you a clear quote.
Not sure how far down it should go, or what you'd do with the spot afterward? David can talk it through with you when he comes out.
When Stump Grinding Makes Sense
Sometimes it's in the way. Sometimes you're just done looking at it.
A stump doesn't have to be causing a problem before grinding it makes sense.
You may have:
- A stump you're tired of mowing around
- A tree that just came down, or one that's about to
- Old stumps from a removal years ago, maybe from before you owned the place
- A spot where you'd like a bed, a fence line, a patio, or plain grass
- A stump right where you park, walk, or cut through the yard
- Several stumps across an area you're opening up
- A yard that would look finished with the stump gone
And sometimes you just don't want it there anymore.
It's your yard.
Worth Grinding?
If you're not sure it's worth doing, David can take a look and tell you what he thinks.
Sometimes it's worth doing. Sometimes it can wait. You'll get a straight answer either way.
What to Expect
Most of the estimate is working out whether a grinder can get to the stump, and how far down it can go once it's there.
When David comes out, he looks at:
- The size of the stump and how it's sitting
- What's around it, like beds, a fence, a walkway, or the house
- How a grinder gets to it, and anything in the way, like a gate, a slope, or a retaining wall
- What you're planning for the spot afterward
Then you get a price and an explanation of what it covers.
You decide. If it's a go, we get it on the schedule.
On the day, we bring the grinder in. Where it has to cross the yard, we put mats down first.
We grind the stump as far down as you want, and as far as the grinder can safely reach.
Then we remove the grindings, fill the hole back in with dirt, and rake the spot out before we leave.
The goal is to prevent damage to the yard. Where we can't prevent damage, we do our best to put it right.

How Far Down It Goes
That's up to you, and to what the grinder can reach.
Tell us what you're planning for the spot.

Want grass over it, a bed, or something planted there?
We grind it down, scoop out the grindings, and fill the hole with dirt.

Just want to mow over it and forget it?
It doesn't need to go as far.

Rather leave part of it?
That's fine too.
What Limits the Depth
Not every stump ends up level with the ground around it, and not everybody wants it to.
Steep slopes, narrow gates, retaining walls, and tight corners can limit how close a grinder can get, and how far down it can go.
Stumps a Grinder Can't Reach
Some stumps can't be reached with a grinder at all.
David will look at yours during the estimate and tell you what the grinder can do there, before anything is quoted.
Tree Removal
Tree still standing?
If the tree hasn't come down yet, we can take it down and grind the stump.
You can have the stump ground when the tree comes down, schedule it for later, or leave it in place.
Stump grinding is quoted separately from the removal, so you'll see both and can decide.

Land Clearing
More than a few stumps?
If you're opening up a whole area, with brush, undergrowth, and trees coming out along with the stumps, that's land clearing.
We can clear the lot and take care of the stumps as part of the same job.

Landscaping and Beds
Know what's going in the spot?
Once the stump is out and the hole is filled, the space is yours.
If you'd like a planting bed there, new shrubs, or a tree in a better place, we can do that work too.

Why Work With Us
You'll know what's possible before you decide.
After more than 25 years of tree and property work around Greater Chattanooga, we've been on plenty of slopes, ridges, and tight lots.
When David comes out for an estimate, he's looking at more than the stump.
He's looking at how to get a grinder to it, what's around it, and what you want the spot to be once it's gone.
Want it ground so you can mow over it and never think about it again?
We'll quote that.
Want the hole filled so you can put grass or a bed there?
He'll walk you through what that takes.
Not sure it's worth doing at all?
He'll tell you what he sees.
Sometimes grinding it opens up a spot you'll get some use out of.
Sometimes a stump can stay right where it is, and he'll say so.
And sometimes a grinder can't get to it. You'll hear that up front, not after.
The goal is to give you a clear answer about the stump, and then do the work well when you're ready.
Out On A Limb For You is an insured Georgia LLC based in Flintstone, Georgia and serves customers throughout Greater Chattanooga on both sides of the Georgia-Tennessee state line.
The team took down a dead hickory that was 3 feet from our house and 2 feet from our deck. The tree was in a corner of the 2 structures. It came down without mishap to anyone or anything. The stump is a few inches tall, but there was no way to get a grinder to the stump due to being on a ridge and the slope of our yard. I highly recommend this company.

Frequently Asked Questions
Questions about stump grinding
Do you put chemicals on the stump?
No.
The stump is ground out with a stump grinder. Nothing is put on it or in it.
Can you get a grinder to any stump?
Not every one.
A steep slope, a narrow gate, a retaining wall, or a tight corner can keep the grinder from reaching a stump, or from getting as far down as you'd like.
David looks at where the stump sits during the estimate. If the grinder can't get to it, you'll hear that before you decide anything.
How far down do you grind, and what's left when you're done?
That's up to you and to the spot.
If you want grass or a bed there, we grind it down, remove the grindings, and fill the hole with dirt. If you just want to mow over it, it doesn't need to go as far.
A few pieces usually end up around the spot while we're grinding, and we clean those up too.
Will you come out for just one stump?
Yes.
One stump in the front yard is a normal job. So is a row of them left after a clearing.
Tell us what you've got and what you want the spot for, and we'll quote it.
